Summary

On June 24, 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the U.S. Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pa. v. Casey by a vote of 6-3, ending a nearly 50-year recognition of a constitutional right to have an abortion. In the process, the Court laid out a theory of constitutional interpretation coupled with a startling approach to precedent. The decision raises a number of questions about the government’s power to control the lives of citizens in personal and medical matters and carries significant implications for numerous other matters of legal concern, from intimacy to procreation to equality.

On Thursday, July 7 at 12:15 p.m., the MCBA’s Academy of Law presented an online seminar reviewing the law as it stood prior to Dobbs, summarizing the majority, concurring, and dissenting opinions in the case, and tackling implications for privacy, liberty, precedent, and more. This program will feature Elizabeth Cordello from Pullano & Farrow PLLC as the moderator, retired NY Court of Claims Judge Richard A. Dollinger, and University at Buffalo School of Law Professor Lucinda Finley.
