Summary

A recent New York Senate Report found that Black women in New York die during pregnancy and shortly thereafter at five times the rate of white women.  The disparity cannot be explained simply by the effect of issues related to poverty.  Black women with incomes in the top 20% of New Yorkers die at rates similar to white women in the lowest 20% of income.  And the current maternal death rates are not inevitable.  The State Health Department reported that 78% of maternal deaths are preventable.

Join the Lawyers’ Coalition for Racial and Social Justice and expert panelists for a three-part series highlighting how the legal community can better support those who are working to end this deadly disparity.  As The Black maternal health crisis requires more than simply awareness—it demands a coordinated, community-led response—this series moves beyond the “what” to the “how,” creating an opportunity for legal professionals, community partners and stakeholders to align their efforts, reflecting the priorities of the community.
